The Project: A celebration and fundraising campaign hosted by the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse (GCSA) and designed to further the positive momentum of a consortium of Georgia-based substance abuse Prevention Partners whose successes in keeping Georgia’s families and communities from experiencing the harmful effects of substance abuse are in jeopardy.

Our Three goals:
* To increase community awareness of the value of effective substance abuse prevention
* To celebrate and recognize measurable prevention results achieved by local and state prevention partners
* To increase financial resources available to re-invest in substance abuse prevention that IS working

The Problem: Substance abuse remains a chief challenge to the health and safety of Georgia’s children and families. In the examination of contributing factors to crime, violence, child abuse, HIV/AIDS, the health care crisis, and budget deficits, one element linked to all of these stands out -- substance abuse.

The Good News:we’ve made progress. Drug use among youth is down 11% over the past two years, due in large part to successful research-based, community-driven prevention efforts. Research shows that for every $1 invested in effective prevention, a savings of up to $10 in treatment for alcohol or other substance abuse can be seen.

The Bad News: too many of our young people still experiment with drugs, and too often successful prevention strategies are not sustained due to lack of funds, and the gains made are lost. Georgia spends over 13% of the state budget on problems related to alcohol and drug abuse. More than 96% of this pays for the avoidable social and physical consequences that result from our failure to apply what we know about how to prevent and treat substance abuse.
